Definition of Dynamic Verb


We
can define it as “A dynamic or fientive verb is a verb that shows continued or
progressive action on the part of the subject”.


What
is Dynamic Verb



The world Dynamic is an adjective which means movement or
change. It has duration and occurs over time (with or without defined
endpoint). Dynamic verbs are like to run, to hit, to savour, to go, to
intervene, etc. Dynamic verbs are used to describe an action rather than a
state, that’s why sometimes known as action verbs. For example:


  • I am chasing the car.

  • I am reading



Wide range of continued or progressive actions on the part of
subject, expressed by the dynamic verbs, can be physical (to run), mental (to
ponder), and perceptual (to see). Whereas, stative verbs are completely
opposite to it, they are used to express the state of the subject (without or
no obvious action, such as to know, to believe, to suppose etc).


Dynamic verbs are used in both, simple and perfect forms (such
as plays, has played, played and had played) as well as continuous or
progressive forms (such as is reading, was reading, has been reading and had
been reading).

  • He was playing cricket on Monday.
